The First Hours Matter
Helping Mothers Get Breastfeeding Off to a Healthy Start
A baby has arrived.
For a mother, those first hours can be among the most beautiful—and overwhelming—of her life.
She may be exhausted. She may be unsure. She may be holding her newborn for the first time and wondering:
Am I doing this right?
When it comes to breastfeeding, a little timely support can make a very big difference.
Practical help when mothers need it most
Through our partnership with the maternity hospital, FSNF supports mothers during those important first days after birth.
Our team meets with hospitalized and postpartum mothers to talk about the benefits of breastfeeding and, just as importantly, to provide hands-on help.
Mothers can learn how to position their baby, achieve a comfortable latch, recognize effective feeding, and understand some of the common challenges that can arise in the early days.
The goal isn’t simply to tell a mother that breastfeeding is good.
It is to help her actually do it.
Because information is valuable—but sometimes a mother needs someone beside her, showing her what to try and reassuring her that she isn’t alone.
The conversation doesn’t end at discharge
One of the biggest gaps we see in maternal care is the transition from hospital to home.
A mother may feel confident while she is surrounded by nurses and midwives, only to find herself awake at 3 a.m. with a crying baby and a question she doesn’t know how to answer.
That is why FSNF has helped build a continuum of breastfeeding support that extends beyond the hospital through MamiCare.
Mothers can access lactation consultations, home visits, education, and ongoing support as they navigate those first weeks with their baby.
The hospital is the beginning—not the end—of the chain of care.

Your support puts help within reach
Every mother deserves the opportunity to make informed choices about feeding her baby and to receive compassionate, practical support along the way.
But providing that support takes people, time, training, and resources.
Your donation helps make those moments of one-on-one support possible.
It means a mother who is struggling can have someone sit beside her.
It means a new parent can leave the hospital with more confidence.
And it means that when breastfeeding doesn’t go according to plan, a mother knows where to turn.
Help us give more mothers and babies a healthy beginning.
